Lidtone plays sounds that change as you open and close your MacBook’s lid, from a creaky door to a slide whistle. It requires a MacBook with a lid angle sensor and supports custom opening sounds up to three seconds long.

Lidtone adds sound effects to opening and closing your MacBook’s lid. Its six sound modes use real recordings, with the lid’s movement driving the sound rather than simply triggering a clip. The wooden door creaks more when you open it slowly, while the slide whistle rises as you open the lid and falls as you close it.

Other modes include a rubber duck, cat, cartoon and seagull. The app says good morning on the first opening of the day, and you can add your own opening sound of up to three seconds. It includes a menu bar interface.

A lid angle sensor is required. Supported models are the MacBook Air with M2 or later, 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 or later, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019. The M1 MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and desktop Macs lack the required sensor.

Lidtone processes lid sensor data and custom sounds locally. It reads the sensor frequently only while the lid moves, and stops reading it during sleep or while the lid is closed. No permissions or account are required, and it connects to the internet only to check for updates.
