Murmurtale

Murmurtale helps fiction writers dictate scenes directly into their writing app. Hold a key and speak to insert text at your cursor, with dialogue placed in quotation marks and prose broken into paragraphs. Dialogue formatting follows US English manuscript conventions.

The app offers cloud and on-device speech recognition, with the cloud engine selected by default. Both engines support English only. Murmurtale runs from the menu bar and needs Microphone permission to capture speech and Accessibility permission to insert finished text.

Murmurtale requires macOS 14 or later and an Apple Silicon Mac with an M1 chip or newer; Intel Macs are not supported. Allow about 700 MB of disk space for the app and its on-device speech model, which downloads on first launch.
